The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy's Executive Council set up a committee whose task was to consider the creation of Higher Technical Institutions for post-war industrial development in India. The 22-member committee, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, recommended the establishment of these institutions in various parts of India, with affiliated secondary institutions.

Following this, the first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur. The IITs have gone a long way from there. Today with 15 IITs established and functioning, the Government is looking at 20 more in the near future.

Whether it’s a good idea or not to set up more of these premier institutes is debatable. While purists believe that more number of IITs would only fuel to average and mediocre talent, the new-age academicians believe that it will give more aspirants an opportunity to study in one of India’s premier institutes.
