Following this, the first Indian Institute of Technology was founded in May 1950 at the site of the Hijli Detention Camp in Kharagpur. The IITs have gone a long way from there. Today with 15 IITs established and functioning, the Government is looking at 20 more in the near future.

Whether it’s a good idea or not to set up more of these premier institutes is debatable. While purists believe that more number of IITs would only fuel to average and mediocre talent, the new-age academicians believe that it will give more aspirants an opportunity to study in one of India’s premier institutes.
