Introduction to Indian Postal Services

The Department of Posts functioning under the brand name India Post is a government operated postal system in India. The Indian Postal Service, with 155,335 post offices approximately, is the most widely distributed post office system in the world. The large numbers are a result of a long tradition of many disparate postal systems which were unified in the Indian Union post-Independence.

Owing to this far-flung reach and its presence in remote areas, the Indian postal service is also involved in other services such as small savings banking and financial services.


Employees:

The Officers selected from the Indian Postal Service Examinations, work with field officers in various capacities during probation so as to learn about the entire functioning of the service. When training is over the appointment is as Senior Superintendent of Post Offices or Railway Mail in large district towns and Divisional Headquarters.

Moving over to the senior scale, the promotion is to the rank of Assistant Post Master General. The next promotion in the JAG as well as selection grade is as Director. The Senior Administration Grade Promotion is to the rank of the Post Master General of a 'Circle' Above them are the Senior Deputy Director Generals who are equivalent to Additional Secretary in a Ministry or member of Post and Telegraph Board (total 8 in number). The Chairman of the Board is at the top.

Postal Services:

International Registered Post

In an International Registered Post the Delivery time is normal, the only difference is at every stage it's been registered by the postal department.

Speed Post

The speed post is a special service provided by India Post. The very high speed express service for letters and documents. Speed Post links more than 1200 towns in India, with 290 Speed Post Centres in the national network and around 1000 Speed Post Centres in the state network. For regular users, Speed Post provides delivery 'anywhere in India' under contractual service. Speed Post offers a money-back guarantee, under which the Speed Post fee will be refunded if the consignment is not delivered within the published delivery norms.

Logistics Post

A comparatively new service provided by India Post for sending parcel and large consignments across the country. It also has services for international logistics. Logistics Post offers not only physical logistics services but also provides comprehensive supply chain management services, leading to improvement in the service level efficiency.

Non Postal Services

Postal Life Insurance

Postal Life Insurance was started in 1884. It was started as a welfare measure for the employees of Posts ; Telegraphs Department under Government of India. The popularity of its schemes extended its reach to various departments of Central and State Governments were extended its benefits. Postal Life Insurance is open for employees of all central and state government departments, nationalized banks, public sector undertakings, financial institutions, local municipalities and Zila Parishads and educational institutions aided by the Government.

ePayment

It is the most convenient and fast way of paying any bills. India post has tremendous reach and expertise to make the ePayment possible under one roof. E-Payment is a 'Many to One' service through which bills (telephone, electricity, etc.) paid by customers in post offices is electronically consolidated.

Instant Money Order Service (iMO)

Domestic money transfer service in India is available at the post office. The instant domestic money is available in 717 post offices. However no International Money Order facility is available.

Other Financial Services

The post office has also traditionally served as a financial institution for millions of people in rural India. Currently these are some of the activities being supported:

Ltd, for better employment opportunities, has come up with a unique concept of bridging the gap between employer and employee by introducing e-Employment exchange through web portal www.icodecity.com which will be available globally for candidates by paying one time nominal cost of Rs.300/- in lieu of purchasing of iCODECARD by candidates through retail post counters of 116 identified Post offices in Maharashtra and Goa States.
