dude seriously bataun ... i got my first year in NIT rourkela complete and my first year experience says its very difficult to study in a hostel ... u will always want to hang out with friends, watch movies, partying etc... but 1-2 hrs study initially will help a lot since as the exam will approach u will start to feel the heat of the syllabus ... if u find that a difficult job then u can always plan which subjects u will study for how many days , a certain time, before exams start , say 15-20 days ...
u can attend lectures... atleast don't miss maths classes ... u can attend 70% of rest classes if u r nt the type of studying regularly .... rest u will feel engineering is fun ... always masti ka mood

Extra curricular activities as in taking part in different clubs on the institute is important.
That will fetch u an excellence or some sort of certificate which might just catch the the attention of the interviewer during ur placement interview .

    Re: IITs

My first choice would be EE @ NIT
If you like to work on sites Ism dhanbad offers one of the best mining courses.
CSE at a good college is preffered.

    Re: IITs

Manage your emotions thats the trick .
your interests tend to sway just keep in mind that you are there to become a good engineer so though you enjoy a lot do some projects and learn as much as possible outside the book though difficult.
A better answer can be given from your seniors of the branch and college .
And one most important thing never hesitate to ask anything to the proffessors though it is trivial
