mu1MUMBAI: Around 150 engineering students protested outside the Fort campus of Mumbai University, asking officials to shed light on the implementation of the eight-year policy.

Students of several engineering colleges claimed that the university has issued so many circulars on the year of implementation of the policy that they are extremely confused.

While one states that the policy is applicable from the 2003-04 batch, another says it is applicable only from the 2004-05 batch. "The university has released a circular on the policy in September 2002 making it mandatory for all students to clear their BE degree within eight years of enrollment. However, in 2009, it released a circular explaining the policy and also stated that it will be applicable from academic year 2004-05 and onwards. Now the university is not allowing us to appear for the exam," said a student.

19a475e31310636200535.1f44701f.m_mumbaiFor the past few years, the vocational, or the 'bifocal', courses in junior colleges in Mumbai have been quite popular among the toppers. However, 2011 is witnessing a change.

The number of students who have applied for the bifocal courses in commerce and science streams has decreased to about 18,000 from more than 31,000 in 2010.

Ironically, the seats for these courses have been increased seeing the past demand.

Last year, there were 7,906 open seats for the bifocal courses and there were 31,131 applicants for those. This year, the number of open seats was increased to 12,474, but the number of applicants for those has fallen to mere 18,000 odd. So, the applicants to bifocal seats ratio has decreased from 4:1 to mere 1.5:1.

The principal of one of the Mumbai junior colleges attributed this drop in interest in bifocal courses to the student preference to keep their options open. The bifocal courses limit the subsequent options. For instance, a student who has studied bifocal science course would not be able to opt for microbiology or biomedical engineering subjects. As the students are realizing this downside, the popularity of the bifocal courses is waning.

High cuts off ensure rush

Even though less number of students applied for the bifocal courses this year, the students and parent still rushed to grab seats after the admissions opened on 13 July.

With the cut-offs for the most preferred colleges expected to remain above 90 per cent, the scramble for bifocal seats is expected to persist.
